7 WC Wins! 2 BGN Wins! Another IROC Title! More points for any WC Season! While Jeffy wins the WC Championship for 1998, Mark has his best season yet and for his tenth straight season finishes in the top ten in points.  It has also been a year of personal conflict with the death of his father.  Look for 1999 to be an even better season for Mark.  Stay tuned for upcoming announcements!

AWESOME!Mark wins his fourth IROC championship at Indy!  While he could have simply cruised to the championship Mark came from a LAST POSITION START to win the final IROC race of the 1998 season.  Jeffy was left in the dust as usual.  This makes a record three consecutive championships in the International Race of Champions. Awesome!
For the Winston Cup race at the Brickyard on Saturday,  Mark worked his way to second looking like he would make take the lead but two cautions in the last 10 laps kept him from winning two races this weekend.  Mark remains second in the points race.           1 August 1998

Mark makes it four at Michigan and three with the same car!  At The Miller Lite 400 Mark made his move late in the race to make four wins.  This is the same car he has won twice before and again starting from seventh.  Third in the points standings for the Championship, Mark seems like he may be on his way to sitting at the head of the table in December.
Mark is Second in the third IROC race of the season to remain in the lead in his quest for a Fourth IROC championship!  Roush teamates Jeff Burton and Tommy Kendall finished ahead and behind of Mark in the race at Michigan.  Burton is 8 points behind Mark in the IROC points standings.    14 June 1998

First Busch win of the '98 sea!  At Charlotte Motor Speedway Mark won the CarQuest
Auto Parts 300 in the #60 Winn Dixie Ford.  This makes 33 career wins in the Busch Grand National Division, expanding the already remarkable record.  What will Mark do Sunday (6:15pm) for the 3rd race at CMS the CocoCola 600?  Let's go Mark!    23 May 1998

Mark Wins the WINSTON! Jeffy runs out of gas!   Mark won the second and final segment of The Winston (a non-points race).  Mark's team decided on a 4 tire change (expecting others to take 4 also) and while this pushed him towards the middle of the pack it also helped move in quickly to the front.  Mark was in second coming up to Jeffy when Jeffy (after causing a false start which required three laps to resync the pack) ran out of gas.  Would Mark pass Jeffy anyway on the final lap? Who knows? But this is racing.  Mark ran out of gas in California while in the lead in '97 (although he didn't cause a false start) so he too knows the agony.  This marks Mark's first win in The Winston "Just for the money & glory" race.  This also makes his fourth Winston Cup win of the '98 season.    18 May 1998

Mark Wins and also Wins this past week!!! Mark wins both at the California 500 for his 3rd Nascar win of the 1998 season (25th career Winston Cup win) and also wins the second IROC race of the season.  After the California 500 Mark moves to fifth in the Winston Cup points race.  In IROC Mark is now in the points lead, hopefully on his way to his third consecutive title among the best drivers in the world.  For those that were at the race with scanners, you unfortunatly had to hear little Jeffy whining...too bad Jeffy...    3 May 1998

Mark wins at Texas!!!  This track eats up cars and drivers but Mark managed to survive and prosper.  His teamate Chad Little finishing a strong second enjoying his best finish inWinston Cup.  Mark's pit crew also deserve recognition for great pit stops and the decision for a 2 tire change.  This win puts Mark into 4th place for the championship.

Mark Martin was named 19 January 1998 to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.  NFL Super Bowl and NCAA       championship football coach Jimmy Johnson and NCAA champion basketball coach Nolan Richardson also are being inducted into the hall of fame.

Okay folks, Jeffrey is now the 1997 Winston Cup Champion.  But Mark still had a championship season!
After a dry spell in 1996, Mark had 4 Wins, 16 top 5's, 24 top 10's, 3 poles and finished third in points only 29 points behind Jeffy. In addition to Winston Cup racing, he won his third IROC title, finished 24th in the Busch Grand Nationals (w/only 15 races beating some full season drivers) and had 6 (you read right) wins (that's more than BGN champion LaJoie) in that division.  A true 1997 Champion!

Now if you want to compare Jeffy against Mark, look at IROC.  IROC is 12 top drivers in not only NASCAR but CART and IRL.  The cars are completely identical (firebirds), serviced by IROC and not the drivers.  There are no pit stops except for accidents and tthe pit crews are IROC.  It is simply a competition between drivers.  The leader in points starts the next IROC race at the back as there is no qualifying.  Mark is the Champion for the third time (second year in a row) while Jeffy finished 6 in points, never winning an IROC champion.  As a side note, Jeffy's crew chief came from IROC.
